SUMMARY:The Wish
DESCRIPTION:Tickets here. \nPresented by A Chronicles in collaboration with MoCA Westport \nSex. Abortion. \nWhen a script called” the wish\,” a last-ditch manual to save abortion in the United States through theater\,” written by six young women on the eve of the Texas Supreme Court’s decision to criminalize abortion was handed to me\, I was reluctant to take on such a radical theater piece. I had just launched the “A” Chronicles with a grand vision to find and stage stories of heartbreak\, moral indignity\, quandaries\, love\, and passion\, all dealing with abortion. I had been a lobbyist for Roe V. Wade in New York State in 1973. I had witnessed the scary times “before\,” and then the freedom and peace of “after.” \nThe Wish was unlike anything I ever saw\, read\, or heard. Like listening to Rap and Hip-Hop lyrics\, I had to adjust my experiential lens to hear/see the pathos in the mini-dramas and get used to the true language of women living in environments where they have little control over their own lives. Yes\, profanity is part of how they tell their stories. \nTo make a difference in the arts we must push past discomfort. I had to resurrect and strengthen the outrage of my own younger self. After three workshop readings of these compelling monologues\, wry short play cycles\, mesmerizing mythological tales\, along with witch’s spells for herbs\, and magical empowerment\, producing The Wish became an imperative. \nBecause theater makes visible lives other than your own\, we hope you enter the real world of where we are in women’s reproductive rights\, now in 2024. \n-Ina Chadwick\, Executive Producer\, “A” Chronicles \n  \nOriginal Script & Dramaturgy by Justice Hehir\, Dena Igusti\, Phanésia Pharel\, Nia Akilah Robinson\, Julia Specht & May Treuhaft-Ali \nAdditional Script Contributions by Laurel Marlantes\, Imprint; Faith de Savigne\, Preconceived; Germaine Shames\, Thelma and Louise Get An Abortion \nDirector – Martha LoMonaco\, PhD \nExecutive Producer – Ina B Chadwick for the achronicles.org \n  \n
