SUMMARY:Cyanotypes: Making Art with Sunlight-Garden Workshop for Teens
DESCRIPTION:July 17\, 3-5 PM \nEnjoy a day in the sun making cyanotype impressions\, and getting hands-on exposure to early photographic printing processes. Cyanotypes were invented in 1842\, preceding roll film by several decades. Cyanotypes were an early way to visualize our natural world\, and learn the structure of plant biology. Get into the mindset of the first photo book publisher in the history of the world—botanist Anna Atkins—by exploring this method of contact printing. During this workshop\, students will understand the concept of a photographic negative\, discover the history of making and printing images\, and learn about the medium’s groundbreaking contribution to both science and expressive art. \nStudents should bring several of their own objects to class\, such as shiny materials\,\nsemi-transparent materials\, crafting materials\, uniquely-shaped objects\, and/or organic\nnontoxic plant matter such as leaves or flowers. DO NOT BRING: Precious or valuable\nitems exceeding $5 in case of loss\, any sharp objects that may cause injury\, or any\nflammable or toxic material. \n$30 Workshop Fee; MoCA Members receive 10% off \nRegister Here. \nAbout The Instructor:\nShelli Weiler is an image-based artist from New York who uses digital and analog cameras to explore social conventions and the mechanics of display. Her work deploys the language of documentary photography to look at the production of fantasy and its failure. Her previous subjects include made-for-Instagram selfie factories\, gender-segregated ultra-orthodox weddings\, and behind-the-scenes footage on horror film sets. \nShelli Weiler received her MFA from Yale School of Art and BA from Wesleyan University\, where she currently teaches darkroom and digital photography. She is based in Connecticut and continues to make work in New York.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Tod Papageorge: At the Beach + In the Pool: On Influence\, we invite you for an evening of classical portrait-making with artist and photographer Lewis Derogene. In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll explore how to channel the elegance and drama of Baroque paintings into your own portrait photography. \nWe’ll begin with a quick look at masterworks by painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt to better understand techniques—like chiaroscuro—that defined the era. Then\, we’ll dive into how those same effects can be recreated through lighting\, composition\, and set design. \nBring your camera or smartphone + bring a partner too\, as you’ll be photographing each other! You’ll learn how to set up lighting and backdrops\, use fabric and props to build a scene\, and frame portraits that feel both timeless and personal. \nAt the end of class\, participants will upload their top shots for a group critique. Images will be displayed on a large monitor for constructive feedback and shared inspiration. \nParticipants are encouraged to share their final portraits on Instagram and tag @MoCA_CT. \n$30 Workshop Fee; MoCA Members receive 10% off \nRegister Here. \nAbout the Instructor:\nLewis Derogene\, who also goes by her artistic moniker PhenomenaLewis\, is an artist and photographer based in Stamford\, CT. Her work has been featured in publications such as Culture Icon Zine\, Populist Magazine\, the April 2024 issue of Westport Lifestyle\, and more. Most recently\, she was a featured photographer in acclaimed Italian art critic Giorgio Bonomi’s fourth edition photography book\, The Solitary Body\, Il Corpo Solitario IV.\nShe is currently pursuing an MA in Fashion Art Direction at the Academy of Art University and holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. \nInspired by the rich visual language of Baroque painting\, Derogene creates compelling portrait and self-portrait photographs that explore and challenge sociopolitical biases within the Black community.\nYou can view more of her work at www.phenomenalewis.com.

SUMMARY:Baroque Portrait Photography Adult Workshop with Lewis Derogene
DESCRIPTION:Register here: $20  \nBack by popular demand\, the Baroque photography workshop\, led by artist and photographer Lewis Dérogène brings you Baroque Photography Workshop. \nAs part of the Lunch + Learn series at MoCA\CT\, this workshop invites participants to not only bring their own lunch but to also bring their own camera or phone to capture beautiful moments of creativity. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, participants will explore how to channel the elegance and drama of Baroque paintings into their own photography. \nThe workshop will begin with a brief overview of photographers whose works are inspired by the baroque and rococo period. Then participants will choose an image from a selection of provided printouts showing works by Rembrandt\, Caravaggio\, Vermeer\, Anthony Van Dyck and more to recreate for their own individual project. They will create their set up with various choices for backdrops and adjust their subject whether still life or portrait and fix the lighting to give them their desired mood and aesthetic. Once everyone has created their pastiche of a classical painting\, they will then collaborate to create two photographs\, one still life and one figurative. \nBring your camera\smartphone\, props\, fabric\backdrops + a friend! You’ll learn how to set up lighting and backdrops\, use fabric and props to build a scene\, and frame portraits and still-lifes that feel both timeless and exciting. \nAt the end of class\, participants will upload their top shots for a group critique. Images will be displayed on a large monitor for constructive feedback and shared inspiration. \nParticipants are encouraged to share their final portraits on Instagram and tag @MoCA_CT. \nAbout the instructor\nLewis Dérogène\, who also goes by her artistic moniker PhenomenaLewis\, is an artist and photographer based in Stamford\, CT. Her work has been featured in publications such as Culture Icon Zine\, Populist Magazine\, the April 2024 issue of Westport Lifestyle\, and more. Most recently\, she was a featured photographer in acclaimed Italian art critic Giorgio Bonomi’s fourth edition photography book\, The Solitary Body\, Il Corpo Solitario IV.\nShe has an MA in Fashion Art Direction at the Academy of Art University and holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. \nInspired by the rich visual language of Baroque painting\, Dérogène creates compelling portrait and self-portrait photographs that explore and challenge sociopolitical biases within the Black community. \nYou can view more of her work at www.phenomenalewis.com.
