SUMMARY:Exhibition Hours
DESCRIPTION:Visit the exhibition\, ColleCTomania between 12-4 PM. \nRegister Here. \nAbout ColleCTomania: \nThis exhilarating exhibition displaying over 140 Swiss posters from the renowned collector Tom Strong. Strong is a New Haven\, Connecticut-based graphic designer\, photographer and collector who has spent sixty years amassing\, displaying\, sharing\, and living amongst his archive. The exhibition\, curated by Pamela Hovland and Karen Salsgiver\, includes a widely diverse range of posters from the 1930s to the present. \n\nSwitzerland’s design culture has had a significant influence on the discipline of graphic design. Swiss posters in particular\, especially those designed during the 1950s and 60s\, have attained iconic status and are part of design education in schools across the globe. Created at uniform scale to be displayed in the streets of Zurich\, Lucerne and Basel\, these posters are now highly collectible\, preserved in the archives of major museums and reproduced in art and design books. \nYale University’s graphic design program\, the first in this country\, was critical in disseminating the work and ideas of Swiss designers. Several influential practitioners were invited to New Haven to teach courses and workshops to students\, including Tom Strong\, eager to experiment with typography\, form and craft. When Yale’s design graduates scattered around Connecticut and the country as both practicing and teaching designers\, the visual language and ideology of the ‘Swiss International Style’ spread far and wide. \n\nThe poster as a large\, public\, graphic form has held its prominent place throughout the history of design. Tom Strong’s vast collection of Swiss posters\, accumulated over six decades\, spans the mid-century to today. His archive includes diverse and boundary-breaking visual strategies employed through inventive uses of type and typography\, image-making\, layering and collage. The posters illustrate myriad expressions in style\, subject matter and ever-evolving technologies. Strong’s posters showcase both the outsized influence of Swiss design as well as the contemporary experimentation that builds on that legacy. Seeing the posters fill the gallery walls is pure visual delight. \nColleCTomania invites the viewer to interact with the posters in a way that correlates to the way we interact with social content; The fast pace consumption of images and text and managing to remember the most impactful or relating subjects. The idea of swiping as we see content is no different from how we view art in any institution. We tend to stand for the works that render us speechless and with ColleCTomania\, the wide number of posters that are being displayed serves as a compelling contrast to this belief. \n“Why do I continue to collect Swiss posters? I guess you like Beethoven and then Stravinsky comes along with different principles\, blows your head off. And then you go further\, and you find more composers who you never knew anything about. The body and the brain and the ear are accustomed to surprise and difference and beauty. Other than that\, I can’t defend it or describe it. These posters have power. You can’t deny it.”- Tom Strong

SUMMARY:The Art of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nJoin us on June 8 from 4-5:30 PM for “The Art of Mindfulness” at MoCA Westport. This meditative workshop is designed to be inclusive and welcoming for participants of all backgrounds and experience levels. In this program\, participants embark on a journey of self-awareness and bond with others through practicing mindfulness during a gallery tour at MoCA Westport\, culminating in a sound bath meditation experience led by Lisa Pak of Hummingbird Healing Center. \nSound bath meditations have been shown to reduce stress\, enable deep relaxation\, strengthen the immune system\, enhance creativity\, and uplift the spirit. Participants begin by lying down on yoga mats (think Savasana) and use blankets\, bolsters\, eye pillows\, and other props to become comfortable while the sound starts to “wash” over you. \nLisa uses a wide palate of sound healing instruments\, including gongs\, Himalayan bowls\, crystal bowls\, Native American-style flute\, percussion\, and vocals. She leads you through a journey of the senses\, eventually resting in a profound space of deep inner peace.

SUMMARY:The Wish
DESCRIPTION:Tickets here. \nPresented by A Chronicles in collaboration with MoCA Westport \nSex. Abortion. \nWhen a script called” the wish\,” a last-ditch manual to save abortion in the United States through theater\,” written by six young women on the eve of the Texas Supreme Court’s decision to criminalize abortion was handed to me\, I was reluctant to take on such a radical theater piece. I had just launched the “A” Chronicles with a grand vision to find and stage stories of heartbreak\, moral indignity\, quandaries\, love\, and passion\, all dealing with abortion. I had been a lobbyist for Roe V. Wade in New York State in 1973. I had witnessed the scary times “before\,” and then the freedom and peace of “after.” \nThe Wish was unlike anything I ever saw\, read\, or heard. Like listening to Rap and Hip-Hop lyrics\, I had to adjust my experiential lens to hear/see the pathos in the mini-dramas and get used to the true language of women living in environments where they have little control over their own lives.
SUMMARY:Performing Arts at MoCA: Natalia Kazaryan
DESCRIPTION:Come as early as 6:30 PM to purchase a drink and check out the current exhibition. Purchase tickets here. \nProgram: \nVivian Fung – “Kotekan\,” from Glimpses \nOlivier Messiaen – Selections from Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant -Jésus \nLili Boulanger – Trois morceaux pour piano \nJohannes Brahms – 6 Klavierstücke\, Op. 118 \nGrażyna Bacewicz – Piano Sonata No. 2 \nAbout Natalia Kazaryan: \nFrom Tbilisi\, Republic of Georgia\, pianist Natalia Kazaryan has been hailed by The New York Sun for her “prodigious ability\,” remarking that she “immediately established an atmosphere of strength and confidence.” She is “a marvel among marvels … fascinating\, elegant” (Nice-Matin) and “incredible” (All Classical Portland). \nDedicated to giving equal platform to lesser-known composers in her public appearances\, she notably curated and performed a recital of all women composers at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery in Washington\, D.C.\, a performance The Washington Post named “one of the best classical concerts of the summer 2019.” \nAs a soloist\, she has recently performed both major and lesser-known concertos — including those of Florence Price\, Clara Schumann\, Rachmaninov\, Grieg\, Prokofiev and Mozart — with the National Symphony Orchestra\, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic\, Harrisburg Symphony\, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra\, and other ensembles across the country. Ms. Kazaryan’s acclaimed performance of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement\, conducted by James Ross\, was featured on Front Row Washington (WETA)\, DC’s classical music radio station. \nShe is co-founder of Washington Arts Ensemble\, a nonprofit dedicated to delivering an unforgettable chamber music experience. Having completed its inaugural season\, the groundswell of support for this venture has propelled it well into the future as a touchpoint for many artists who want to connect with this highly unique community. DC Metro Theater Arts best summarized the zeitgeist of this organization: “Economists and policymakers rub shoulders with students\, connect over drinks and fine hors d’oeuvres\, experience live music together\, and meet again afterward to engage with the artists themselves.” \nRecent standout performances include Ms. Kazaryan opening Portland Piano International’s return to in-person concerts\, which was guest curated by Angela Hewitt; a George Walker Musical Portrait at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC; and appearing in a solo recital on the prestigious Chicago series\, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. \nOver the pandemic\, Ms. Kazaryan released three EPs to Spotify and Apple Music: Lili Boulanger’s Trois morceaux pour piano; Bacewicz Piano Sonata No. 2; Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. All recordings were previously made at her Philadelphia recital debut presented by Astral Artists\, which included a special commission by Alexandra Gardner. In 2016\, she won Astral’s National Auditions. \nShe has appeared in the U.S. and Europe at key venues such as New York’s Merkin Concert Hall\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Cultural Campus\, Salzburg’s Schloss Mirabell\, Monaco’s Théâtre des Variétés\, Madrid’s Auditorio Sony\, and Paris’ Salle Cortot and Musée Carnavalet. She performs regularly at the Palazzo Tornabuoni in Florence and has participated in the IMS Prussia Cove Master Classes in Cornwall\, England. \nMs. Kazaryan began studying piano at the age of six and performed as soloist with the Tbilisi State Chamber Orchestra just one year later. She studied in the preparatory division of the Tbilisi Music Conservatory with Alla Nakashidze. She now holds both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School\, where she studied under Jerome Lowenthal and Matti Raekallio. She completed doctoral studies at the University of Michigan under Logan Skelton. \nThe first Juilliard student to participate in the Carla Bruni-Sarkozy exchange with the Paris Conservatoire\, Ms. Kazaryan studied piano in Paris with Michel Béroff and chamber music with Valérie Aimard. An active chamber musician\, she took part in the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship\, dedicated to collaboration between The Juilliard School\, the Paris Conservatoire\, and the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. She later won both a Fulbright Grant and a Harriett Hale Woolley Scholarship to Paris to continue her studies\, with a focus on Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’enfant Jésus. \nFrom 2013-2015\, she studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid\, under Dimitri Bashkirov\, and in June 2014 received a “Sobresaliente” Award from the hands of Queen Sofía of Spain for outstanding work and excellence. \nMs. Kazaryan is on the faculty of Howard University in Washington D.C.
