SUMMARY:Community Conversation: Luciana McClure Lewis on The Language of Feminist Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Register here: $10 general\, $8 seniors + students\, free for members \nWhat does resistance look like in art?\nJoin us for an exploration of The Language of Feminist Resistance\, an informal gallery talk unpacking the power\, nuance\, and defiance behind the exhibition Enough Already: Women Artists from the Sara M. And Michelle Vance Waddell Collection. Whether or not these women artists identified as feminists\, these artists challenged dominant narratives\, subverted expectations\, and carved out space for new ways of thinking about what it means to be a woman in the world.\nThrough themes of the body\, domesticity\, and quiet refusal\, we’ll examine how art becomes a tool of resistance\, and why this language still speaks urgently today. \nLuciana McClure Lewis’ Bio:\nLuciana McClure Lewis is a Visiting Instructor of Women’s\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at University of Connecticut (UConn) in the Department of Social and Critical Inquiry. She is also the lead founder and organizer of the Feminist collective Nasty Women Connecticut. She received her master’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University’s department of Women’s and Gender Studies (SCSU)\, and her bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography. She is past recipient of awards from the Connecticut Office of the Arts and the Arts Council of the Greater New Haven. She recently chaired a day-long symposium during College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference under The Feminist Art Project\, titled: A New Era: Art\, Activism and Abortion in Post Roe America.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation with Kathryn Turley-Sonne
DESCRIPTION:Register Here: $10 general\, $8 for seniors + students \nJoin MoCA\CT for a dynamic panel discussion that considers both the exhibition Enough Already: Women Artists from the Sara M. + Michelle Vance Waddell Collection and the groundbreaking work of Carolee Schneemann featured within it. Moderated by Kathryn Turley-Sonne (PhD)\, professor\, writer\, and an organizer of the exhibition\, the conversation will situate Schneemann’s practice within the broader context of the exhibition’s 80-plus works by modern and contemporary women artists who challenge conventions around gender\, identity\, and social change. Joining Turley-Sonne is Rachel Churner\, art critic\, editor\, and director of the Carolee Schneemann Foundation. \nThe talk will highlight three Schneemann works currently on loan and on view at MoCA\CT: Interior Scroll (1974/1975)\, photographs documenting her influential 1975 performance\, and The Message (1974)\, a drawing that extends the visual and conceptual vocabulary of her performance practice. These works will serve as a lens through which the panel explores themes central to Enough Already\, including the body\, agency\, and the politics of representation in feminist art. \nThis program takes place on Thursday\, January 29\, 2026\, at 6pm at MoCA\CT\, in conjunction with the exhibition’s run through February 15\, 2026. Attendees are invited to experience the exhibition before the program and to join an engaging conversation about Schneemann’s legacy and the ongoing impact of women artists in shaping contemporary visual culture.

SUMMARY:Westport Writers Workshop at MoCA\CT
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspired evening of art and writing. We’ll use MoCA\CT’s current exhibition “Enough Already” as a portal into our own creativity. In this workshop we’ll identify the elements of the exhibited art that most capture our imagination and use this as a jumping-off point. We’ll linger in the unfamiliar space and write from there. Following individual and collaborative exercises\, we’ll share our writing with each other and give positive feedback. For those who wish to take this a step further\, we’ll share tools for how to transform these ideas and musings into stories and essays. \nBook Now: https://checkout.mocact.org/EventAvailability?EventId=15201

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Art\, Jazz + The Blues with WestPAC
DESCRIPTION:Register Here For the Opening Reception. \nArt\, Jazz + the Blues is a collaboration between the Westport Public Art Collections (WestPAC) + MoCA\CT. \nThis exhibit\, curated by Anne Boberski\, Ive Covaci and the WestPAC Committee—explores the powerful intersections between visual art and music\, drawing from the rich holdings of the Westport Public Art Collections (WestPAC). \nThe exhibition centers on Giants of the Blues\, a sweeping series of seven group portraits by Westport native Eric von Schmidt (1931–2007) honoring blues\, jazz\, and folk musicians from the 1920s to the 1960s. Complementing von Schmidt’s paintings are approximately forty artworks from the WestPAC collection depicting musicians\, inspired by musical themes\, or exploring the resonances between musical and visual forms. A selection of important loans from galleries\, museums\, artists and private collections deepen the conversation\, and a screening room features historic performance footage of musicians portrayed in von Schmidt’s paintings. As the jazz great Charlie Parker once said\, the show invites visitors to “hear with your eyes and see with your ears.” \nWestport has long been home to a thriving community of artists and musicians. Since the early 20th century\, the town has attracted generations of illustrators\, painters\, performers\, composers\, and cultural innovators\, and this exhibition highlights the interconnections between artists in our own community and their relationship to broader national and international movements. Today\, music and the visual arts remain a vital part of Westport’s identity\, nurtured through its many performing arts venues\, public art collection\, schools awarded for excellence in music and arts education\, and creative networks. Art\, Jazz + the Blues celebrates this legacy while looking forward to its vibrant future. \nEric von Schmidt’s deep connection to blues and folk music traces back to his youth in Westport\, where he often painted alongside his father\, esteemed illustrator Harold von Schmidt (1893–1982). He fell in love with the blues when he heard Leadbelly on the radio\, and early exposure to the Smithsonian’s music archives ignited a lifelong passion. After graduating from Staples High School and studying at the Art Students League and in Italy on a Fulbright\, von Schmidt moved to Cambridge\, MA\, where he became a central figure in the American folk revival. A prolific artist\, performer\, and mentor to musicians like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez\, von Schmidt also designed album covers and authored prize-winning books on music. Dylan once described him as “a man who can sing the bird off the wire and the rubber off a tire.” \nMoCA\CT is grateful to the generous support of Art\, Jazz + the Blues sponsors Conlon Amendola\, Attorneys at Law + Design Within Reach + The Ellis Family + Bill and Jodi Felton + Hofstetter Baron Group + Honda of Westport + KMS Team at COMPASS + Cynthia and Carl Muller + Joyce Pauker + Russell Insurance + Sabina and Harlan Stone + The Joyce Thompson Art Fund \nMoCA\CT is also grateful to the generous support of Art\, Jazz + the Blues partners A&S Fine Foods + Chocolatieree/ Laureen “Ree” Haynes + Imageworks + Westport Journal + Dan Woog/ 06880 + WPKN + WSHU

SUMMARY:MoCA\CT Presents: Etienne Charles
DESCRIPTION:Tickets \nJoin Trinidad-born trumpeter Etienne Charles at MoCA\CT as he leads a fearless quartet blending straight-ahead jazz with island rhythms\, cinematic textures\, and socially conscious themes. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience one of today’s most compelling jazz voices in an intimate\, immersive setting. \nAbout Charles Etienne \nTrinidad-born Etienne Charles is a performer\, composer and storyteller who is constantly searching for untold tales and sounds with which to tell them. His lush trumpet sound\, varied compositional textures and pulsating percussive grooves enable him to invoke trance\, soothing and exciting listeners while referencing touchy and sometimes controversial subjects in his music.  \nHighlighting marginalized communities and engaging with them has been his mission\, evident with projects such as his Guggenheim Fellowship Project\, Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1\, San Jose Suite\, Creole Soul\, Gullah Roots\, Folklore and his latest commission\, San Juan Hill – A New York Story. His concerts engage\, enlighten\, educate\, and enrich audiences with energized multidisciplinary performance utilizing original composition\, thematic improvisation\, dance\, short films and spoken word to create a holistic experience. A firm believer in music and performance as a tool for provoking thought and dialogue\, Charles’s themes speak to the status quo while drawing parallels to history. \nAs an Afro-descendant\, his work is actively connecting the diaspora and drawing lines to the regions at the roots of migrations\, evident in his latest release\, Creole Orchestra which spent 7 weeks at #1 on the JazzWeek chart this summer. His dedication to music as a tool for social uplift has seen him awarded by France with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres medal (2024) as well as a Congressional Citation from the United States (2012).  \nAs a sideman he has performed with and/or arranged for Roberta Flack\, Chucho Valdes\, Marcus Roberts\, Marcus Miller\, Count Basie Orchestra\, Frank Foster’s Loud Minority Big Band\, Monty Alexander\, Gregory Porter\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, René Marie\, Paulette McWilliams and many others.  He has been commissioned as a composer and arranger by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (2025)\, Lincoln Center for the New York Philharmonic (2021)\, Savannah Music Festival (2017)\, Chamber Music America (2015 & 2021)\, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra (2012) and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble (2011). \nHe currently serves as Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at University of Miami Frost School of Music.
