SUMMARY:Community Conversations (Virtual Only): Conversation with Curator Victoria McCraven and Asmaa Walton
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission; This conversation will take place on Zoom. Register to get the link.  \n\nMoCA Westport is excited to host a virtual community conversation with the curator of It Will Go On\, Victoria McCraven and the founder of the Black Art Library\, Asmaa Walton. Community members will have the opportunity to communicate with the curator of the exhibition and the founder of the Black Art Library in a Q&A session following the discussion. \nMoCA Westport’s newest exhibition It Will Go On poses text as a central and connective framework\, highlighting artists who employ the written word as a driving component of their practice. Featured as part of the exhibition\, Black Art Library provides visitors a relaxed environment to learn more about Black visual art through the pop-up library’s collection. In this one-hour conversation between Victoria and Asmaa\, attendees have the opportunity to learn more about our current exhibition It Will Go On and the first New England installation of  Black Art Library. \nAbout the Black Art Library: \nBlack Art Library is a collection of books and other art history ephemera on Black visual art intended to be an educational resource to share within the Black community and beyond. We intend to introduce or expand the community’s knowledge of Black art from the past and the present through art books.  \nAbout Asmaa Walton: \nAsmaa Walton is a Detroit native\, arts educator and ardent developer of the Black cultural archive. Walton completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Michigan State University in 2017. Upon earning a Master of Arts in Art Politics from New York University Tisch School of the Arts\, in 2018\, Walton joined Toledo Museum of Art as an Education and Engagement Intern. In the same year she was appointed the Museum’s first KeyBank Fellow in Diversity Leadership\, a position where she identified opportunities for diversity and equity programming across museums and cultural institutions. In 2019\, Walton was appointed Romare Bearden graduate Museum Fellow at Saint Louis Art Museum. In February 2020 Walton established Black Art Library which is a collection of publications\, exhibition catalogues and theoretical texts about Black art and visual culture intended to become a public archive in a permanent space in Detroit. \nAbout Victoria McCraven: \nVictoria McCraven is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Art & Archaeology specializing in the art of the African Diaspora. Before beginning her graduate work at Princeton\, Victoria worked as the programs manager at NXTHVN. In 2020\, she was selected as the 27th Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellow at the Saint Louis Art Museum\, and in 2019 received a US-UK Fulbright Postgraduate Award. Victoria’s curatorial projects include Black Bodies on the Cross at the Hood Museum of Art\, Nuotama Frances Bodomo: Afronauts at the Saint Louis Art Museum\, and Christian Curiel: Between Reveries at NXTHVN. Victoria holds an M.A. in History of Art with Distinction from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)\, University of London\, and a B.A. in Geography from Dartmouth College. Victoria is an Emerging Professional Board Member on the College Art Association Board of Directors. \nComment from Black Art Library founder Asmaa Walton:  \n“Black Art Library was born out of the constant observations I made\, while working within museums\, on the lack of resources available for Black art education. This gap exists in the mainstream narration of art history. Many cultural institutions were and still are missing the mark when it comes to sharing histories around Black art and artists. I decided to build my own collection of literary works by and about Black visual artists in February 2020. As an arts educator my thought around this was that I could compile all of this information that can live in one place so people can find it much easier. Black Art Library recognizes the need for learning experiences that foreground Black narratives of art and visual culture that are often excluded from mainstream libraries and curricula\, and aims to make information about Black artistry available to all. So many Black artists get lost in history and I just want to keep their stories alive and visible.”

SUMMARY:Performing Arts at MoCA: Natalia Kazaryan
DESCRIPTION:Come as early as 6:30 PM to purchase a drink and check out the current exhibition. Purchase tickets here. \nProgram: \nVivian Fung – “Kotekan\,” from Glimpses \nOlivier Messiaen – Selections from Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant -Jésus \nLili Boulanger – Trois morceaux pour piano \nJohannes Brahms – 6 Klavierstücke\, Op. 118 \nGrażyna Bacewicz – Piano Sonata No. 2 \nAbout Natalia Kazaryan: \nFrom Tbilisi\, Republic of Georgia\, pianist Natalia Kazaryan has been hailed by The New York Sun for her “prodigious ability\,” remarking that she “immediately established an atmosphere of strength and confidence.” She is “a marvel among marvels … fascinating\, elegant” (Nice-Matin) and “incredible” (All Classical Portland). \nDedicated to giving equal platform to lesser-known composers in her public appearances\, she notably curated and performed a recital of all women composers at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery in Washington\, D.C.\, a performance The Washington Post named “one of the best classical concerts of the summer 2019.” \nAs a soloist\, she has recently performed both major and lesser-known concertos — including those of Florence Price\, Clara Schumann\, Rachmaninov\, Grieg\, Prokofiev and Mozart — with the National Symphony Orchestra\, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic\, Harrisburg Symphony\, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra\, and other ensembles across the country. Ms. Kazaryan’s acclaimed performance of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement\, conducted by James Ross\, was featured on Front Row Washington (WETA)\, DC’s classical music radio station. \nShe is co-founder of Washington Arts Ensemble\, a nonprofit dedicated to delivering an unforgettable chamber music experience. Having completed its inaugural season\, the groundswell of support for this venture has propelled it well into the future as a touchpoint for many artists who want to connect with this highly unique community. DC Metro Theater Arts best summarized the zeitgeist of this organization: “Economists and policymakers rub shoulders with students\, connect over drinks and fine hors d’oeuvres\, experience live music together\, and meet again afterward to engage with the artists themselves.” \nRecent standout performances include Ms. Kazaryan opening Portland Piano International’s return to in-person concerts\, which was guest curated by Angela Hewitt; a George Walker Musical Portrait at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC; and appearing in a solo recital on the prestigious Chicago series\, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. \nOver the pandemic\, Ms. Kazaryan released three EPs to Spotify and Apple Music: Lili Boulanger’s Trois morceaux pour piano; Bacewicz Piano Sonata No. 2; Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. All recordings were previously made at her Philadelphia recital debut presented by Astral Artists\, which included a special commission by Alexandra Gardner. In 2016\, she won Astral’s National Auditions. \nShe has appeared in the U.S. and Europe at key venues such as New York’s Merkin Concert Hall\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Cultural Campus\, Salzburg’s Schloss Mirabell\, Monaco’s Théâtre des Variétés\, Madrid’s Auditorio Sony\, and Paris’ Salle Cortot and Musée Carnavalet. She performs regularly at the Palazzo Tornabuoni in Florence and has participated in the IMS Prussia Cove Master Classes in Cornwall\, England. \nMs. Kazaryan began studying piano at the age of six and performed as soloist with the Tbilisi State Chamber Orchestra just one year later. She studied in the preparatory division of the Tbilisi Music Conservatory with Alla Nakashidze. She now holds both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School\, where she studied under Jerome Lowenthal and Matti Raekallio. She completed doctoral studies at the University of Michigan under Logan Skelton. \nThe first Juilliard student to participate in the Carla Bruni-Sarkozy exchange with the Paris Conservatoire\, Ms. Kazaryan studied piano in Paris with Michel Béroff and chamber music with Valérie Aimard. An active chamber musician\, she took part in the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship\, dedicated to collaboration between The Juilliard School\, the Paris Conservatoire\, and the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. She later won both a Fulbright Grant and a Harriett Hale Woolley Scholarship to Paris to continue her studies\, with a focus on Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’enfant Jésus. \nFrom 2013-2015\, she studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid\, under Dimitri Bashkirov\, and in June 2014 received a “Sobresaliente” Award from the hands of Queen Sofía of Spain for outstanding work and excellence. \nMs. Kazaryan is on the faculty of Howard University in Washington D.C.
