The voice behind 250 million views — live, and just feet away.
There are voices you hear on a recording, and voices you feel in a room. Morgan James has the latter: a four-octave instrument of vintage soul and modern grit that has drawn more than 250 million views online, yet reveals its full force only in person. As part of her Soul Remains Tour, MoCA\CT brings that voice into the intimacy of our galleries — close enough to catch every nuance of a Broadway-trained powerhouse at the height of her command.
Juilliard-trained and forged across five original Broadway companies — among them Motown: The Musical and Godspell — James became a viral phenomenon through her work with Postmodern Jukebox before emerging as one of soul and R&B’s most fearless interpreters. Backed by her dynamic band, she draws on the smoldering ’90s soul of Nobody’s Fool and the horn-fueled rock reinventions of her latest album, Soul Remains the Same, bending hyper-masculine anthems to her own will and remaking them entirely — delivered with the conviction of an artist Berry Gordy Jr. personally mentored.
THE VIP EXPERIENCE
Arrive at 6:00 PM for an exclusive pre-concert reception in Gallery A — a private hour among the contemporary art with complimentary wine, a craft cocktail, and a selection of artisanal hors d’oeuvres. Then settle in for the performance at your own reserved, lamplit bistro table. Wine, light bites, and the best seats in the house — an elevated concert experience.
ABOUT MORGAN JAMES
Morgan James is a Juilliard trained singer, songwriter, actress and recording artist in New York City.
Morgan is currently on tour supporting her 6th studio album, “Soul Remains the Same”: a concept album of heavy rock tunes from the 80s and 90s through a feminine soul lens. She independently released her studio albums of original soul music, entitled Nobody’s Fool, Memphis Magnetic, and A Very Magnetic Christmas recorded to analog tape in Memphis, Tennessee. Other albums include “Reckless Abandon”, which prompted the Huffington Post to call MJ the “Brightest Breakout Artist of the Year”. In addition to her original music, Morgan co-produced and starred in an all-female concept recording of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Morgan has taken on full album covers of the Beatles’ iconic ‘White Album’, Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”, Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, and many more. Morgan recorded two full-length albums with Epic Records: “Hunter”and “Morgan James Live, a celebration of Nina Simone“. All of her music can be found on all streaming platforms, and hard copies on her website or at shows.
On Broadway, Morgan was in five back-to-back original companies: The Addams Family (starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth), Wonderland, Godspell and Motown: The Musical, and as a guest at Kristin Chenoweth’s For The Girls.
With the viral sensation Postmodern Jukebox and with her own YouTube channel, Morgan’s music videos have accumulated more than 300 million views (and climbing).
